Case Study:  Luke Foran

Learner Name:  Luke Foran
Course Type: HGV

Background Barriers & Aims

This learner lives and has grown up in Gloucestershire, they are currently 28 years of age. Luke decided this was a great opportunity as he had left a PAYE job earlier in 2021 (he is a carpenter by trade), but was working self employed as a labourer. This was just a stop gap for him and has always enjoyed driving as part of previous roles where he was required to drive long distances across England/ Scotland. Therefore, HGV driving was something he felt would be a stable career for him and knowing the shortage of workers in the industry thought he would find work quickly.

Actions and Activities Undertaken

For the theory side of the course, Luke (and all learners) have access to an online learning platform, although he learnt a lot of valuable information being face to face, he found that using his IPad and being able to have a voice over on the mock tests/ questions etc. very useful and easier to take in the information in his own surrounding and time.

During his official Theory tests he was able to get the ‘voice overs’ on his exams, he passed all of the exams the first time!

Outcomes and Results

Luke has passed his HGV theory tests and Practical test both on first attempt.

Within 24 hours of passing he applied for 7 jobs and within the next few days was invited to 5 interviews.

Luke particularly liked the sound of one job and attended the interview where they offered him the job there and then. He is now working for Wren Kitchens as a HGV driver all around the South West delivering kitchens. The role is PAYE 48 hours a week.

Learners Feedback

I was excited to hear of the HGV course as have always been interested in driving and consider myself a good driver. I was nervous to do the theory tests as I am better doing practical things. I was really pleased to have passed all of the theory tests on my first go and then to pass the practical first time too I was really chuffed – I did work hard to get my knowledge up to scratch for the theory’s, a friend of mine warned me they were tricky! Betaris really helped to support me with my dyslexia and made sure my exams were booked with the voice over, this was great for me.

Having a full time, permanent role and being employed is great for me and my family and gives me some more stability for the future than being self-employed”.
