Course Overview

This VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (Gym Based Exercise) is a technical level qualification that will develop your knowledge, understanding and technical skills needed for a career in the sport and active leisure industry as a Personal Trainer in gym-based exercise.

The content of this qualification is comprised of all the required elements to work effectively and competently as a Personal Trainer in gym-based exercise, which includes, topics such as:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Principles of exercise health and fitness
  • Knowing how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity
  • Health, safety and welfare
  • Nutrition for physical activity

You will also develop the knowledge and skills needed to plan and instruct gym-based exercise programmes and personal training programmes.

Course Includes

The course duration varies from one day per week over 12 weeks to more intense courses over fewer weeks. Please discuss this with your trainer. All courses will have online study as part of the curriculum .

Entry Requirements

Prior to enrolling in the Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (Gym-Based Exercise), you are required to undergo an initial assessment in both mathematics and English to confirm that you meet the stipulated proficiency levels in these subjects. Proficiency in both written and spoken English is a mandatory prerequisite.

To qualify, it is necessary to provide identification documentation such as a passport or birth certificate. Furthermore, substantiation of address and income is obligatory. Our team will furnish additional details regarding any supplementary eligibility criteria.

Qualifications

This qualification is approved and supported by SkillsActive, the Sector Skills Council for active leisure and learning. To be a Personal Trainer you must have a Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification. However, in this case, the gym instructor qualification is included within this course. Betaris @Gloucestershire College will have made sure that you have the necessary knowledge, understanding, and skills to enrol and successfully achieve this qualification.

Included in the VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (Gym-Based Exercise) are the following mandatory units:

  • Principles of exercise, fitness and health
  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise
  • Planning gym-based exercise
  • Instructing gym-based exercise
  • Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity
  • Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health
  • Programming personal training with clients
  • Applying the principles of nutrition to a physical activity programme
  • Delivering personal training sessions .

Passing the Course

Your VTCT qualifications will be assessed and monitored by staff at Betaris @Gloucestershire College. During practical tasks, a trainer will observe you to help you enhance your practical skills, knowledge, and understanding. You are responsible for compiling all your work in a portfolio and ensuring it meets the requirements in your assessment book. Your trainer will make sure that your assessment and evidence are valid and meet VTCT and regulatory standards. A VTCT-appointed external assurer may visit your training centre to review assessments and evidence, which may require you to attend on a different day. You will need to keep your assessment book with you during assessments or quality assurance checks and store it securely when necessary. You and your trainer will work together to complete your assessment book and show that you have met all learning outcomes, assessment criteria, and ranges.

Certificates

You will receive a certificate from VTCT showing your successful achievement of the VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (Gym-based Exercise). Please note this may be an e-certificate.

FAQs

Will there be written work during my course?

It’s worth keeping in mind that written work is typically part of the qualification process,
with the amount of writing required increasing as you pursue higher qualifications.

I have an injured back / other injuries; will this prevent me from doing the course?

This will depend on what you are restricted to do, it is a manual job where you
will be demonstrating different exercises and equipment to clients.

What happens when I complete the course?

Once you have successfully achieved your qualification and you have received your
certificate, you will be a qualified Advanced Beauty Therapist, specialising in
massage. You can then seek employment opportunities, whether that is selfemployed
or as a PAYE member of staff.

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes, you will receive a certificate, which may be an e-certificate. Please note that it
may take up to 12 weeks to arrive.

What are exam regulations?

If your course includes any exams, it is important that you are familiar with the exam regulations and understand that they are in place to ensure valid assessment of learning. During exam times, you will not be permitted to bring any equipment or
technology into the exam room that allows you to access the internet. This includes
mobile phones, tablets, and smartwatches. We require you to arrive in advance of the exam time and ensure that you leave your equipment at the designated safe spot.

Further Training and Progression

At the end of your course, you may be eligible or choose to advance onto higher
courses or additional training known as progression. Further training refers to the

Is there funding available to help me with travel or childcare costs?

Contact your local job centre and inform them that you will be attending one of our
courses and ask for assistance with travel and/or childcare costs.
