Background Barriers & Aims
Ryan had never been employed and spent 10 years in prison after being convicted of three serious robberies. He was concerned that his criminal record would be a barrier to finding work. Reflecting on his journey, Ryan shared, “I’m 40 years old, and this is my first job.”
Actions and Activities Undertaken
Ryan has put in tremendous effort and achieved a Diploma in Rail Engineering Track Maintenance, along with a Certificate in Rail Engineering Underpinning Knowledge. He has also successfully completed a Safety Critical Training Course and holds both a Sentinel Card and a Competency Card, showcasing his dedication and qualifications in the rail industry.
Outcomes and Results
Passed the NVQ and Safety Critical Training Course. Ryan is now working at Piccadilly Train Station with Vital and has been offered 16 weeks work.
Learner Feedback
Ryan expressed his delight at securing his first job and shared his gratitude for being given a second chance in life. At 40 years old, he is a father to five boys and has a little girl on the way, due in August. During his training, Charles, our rail trainer, encouraged Ryan to contact Mick Williams at Vital for potential job opportunities. Mick responded by offering positions to Ryan and five other learners from the course at Piccadilly Station.
With this opportunity, Ryan and the other learners requested Training Lives to de-sponsor them, allowing them to transfer sponsorship to Vital and start shift work immediately. Ryan shared his aspiration to refer his son, Dillan Corrie, to the course next year when he turns 19. He also spoke warmly of the friendships he built with others on the course, many of whom were navigating similar life challenges.
Ryan was referred to us by Achieve Northwest, and one of his new friends came to the program through Greenstart Probation Company. Inspired by this, we are now exploring opportunities to collaborate with Greenstart, alongside our ongoing partnership with Achieve Northwest.
