What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are combined work-based training and learning programmes designed around the needs of employers, which lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Most of the training is 'on the job' at the employer's premises with the learning aspect being delivered by Betaris Training.

Apprenticeships are available across the whole of the South West of England to anyone over the age of 16 and they can be started at any time. There is no set time within which to complete an Apprenticeship. This depends on the subject area, the abilities of the apprentice and the employer's requirements. Usually they take between 6 months and 2 years to complete.

Apprenticeships are offered at two levels:

Intermediate Apprenticeships (Level 2):

Apprentices work towards gaining qualifications broadly equivalent to 5 good GCSEs plus the experience of working within a specific field. The completion of this level of Apprenticeship can allow entry to an Advanced Apprenticeship.

Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3):

This Apprenticeship level equates to a qualification broadly equivalent to A-Level and also provides the apprentice with more skills in their chosen field.

If you are looking for a job that enables you to carry on learning, or are already in employment and want to gain further qualifications, an Apprenticeship could be a great option for you. An apprentice can work and learn new skills that will lead to a nationally recognised qualification. So, if you or your staff want to earn and learn, an Apprenticeship could be the ideal choice.

Types of Apprenticeships

There are Apprenticeships available in a diverse range of industries from cleaning, security, warehousing and storage to sales. Our mentors will support you and your team through the journey.

How do Apprenticeships Work?

Apprenticeships are designed to engage the employee to develop and utilise skills and qualities to be a productive and motivated team member within the industry. The Apprenticeship offers a structured programme that takes you through the skills you need to do a job well. There are targets and checks to make sure that your employer is supporting you and to make sure that you are making progress.

The employers pay the apprentice a wage and give on-the-job training up to Level 2 or Level 3 qualification standards. Depending on the qualification an apprentice may need to gain skills relevant to the job market such as team working, communication and using new technology. The apprentice is entitled to the minimum wage, but this can be more depending on the employer. Apprentices are eligible for annual holiday and sick leave (entitlement dependent on your employer's terms of employment).

There are lots of benefits to an Apprenticeship. Key benefits include:

Earning while you are learning

  • You will receive at least the minimum wage for apprentices, and this may be more, depending on your employer.

Receiving training and job-specific skills

  • Betaris Training and your employer will make sure that you have support. Our job is to ensure that your training fits your personal requirements, offers the skills needed for the job and satisfies national standards. This makes you ‘fit for the job’.

Gaining qualifications

  • Apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time. You work towards a work-based qualification such as an NVQ, now known as a competency based qualification, and other nationally recognised qualifications.

Great prospects

  • Employers all over the country recognise and value Apprenticeships as they show that you have been trained in the skills they need. Your career doesn't have to stop at an Intermediate or Advanced Apprenticeship. If you want to go on to University you will find that many institutes of Higher Education value your skills and knowledge.

Traineeships

Betaris Training can offer you the opportunity to do a Traineeship
“Traineeships prepare young people, aged 16 to 24, for their future careers by helping them to become ‘work ready’.”
Undertaking a Traineeship is a perfect opportunity for young people between the ages of 16 - 24 to gain essential work preparation training. We offer a 12 week programme that includes 6 weeks of classroom based learning followed by a 6 week industry work placement of your choice.

Reasons for choosing a Traineeship prior to starting an Apprenticeship:

  • You lack work experience
  • You have been applying for Apprenticeships, but have been unsuccessful at application or interview stage
  • You cannot find an employer to take you on as an Apprentice
  • You are not sure which Apprentice job you want to do
  • You found an employer but they can't take you on to an Apprenticeship because of you do not have the required qualifications
  • You have missed out on the Maths and English grades to get on to an Apprenticeship

What is included in a Traineeship?

  • The Traineeship programme last for 12 weeks
  • The Traineeship programme has three elements:
    1.Employability Training - You start your Traineeship at College, preparing for your work placement, developing your employability skills, getting ready for work, preparing for interview, applying for Apprenticeship vacancies and getting ready for your first week at work.

    2. Maths and English - Functional Skills

    3. Six week work placement with an employer. The final 6 weeks will be entirely on placement with the employer. During your work placement, your Job Coach will visit you to support you, assess your progress and work with the employer to help progress you into an Apprenticeship.

How many hours will I be studying and working each week?

  • The Employability training will be for 30 hours per week, Monday to Friday in College. It is intense, but it is important that you work towards your Maths and English, before going to your work placement. Work placement hours will need to meet the business needs. On average you will do 30 hours per week for 6 weeks. This will give you a really good idea of what it will be like to be an Apprentice.
